Valerio Daniel De Simoni, a Sydney-born adventurer and humanitarian advocate, tragically passed away on March 13, 2011, at the age of 24 following a quad bike accident near Lilongwe, Malawi, during an ambitious cross-continental expedition.

Valerio was part of the Quad Squad Expedition, alongside close friends Jamie Kenyon and Kristopher “Ted” Davant, a journey that began in Istanbul and aimed to cross Europe and Africa on quad bikes. The expedition sought to set a world record while raising funds for Oxfam Australia and promoting environmental awareness through the use of sustainable equipment, including solar-powered devices.

As the journey neared its final stages, tragedy struck when Valerio was involved in a serious road accident. He sustained critical injuries and died while being airlifted for medical treatment. His death came just several hundred kilometres before the team was expected to complete their world-record attempt.

Valerio’s passing deeply affected his family, friends, and the many supporters who had followed the expedition. He was remembered not only for his adventurous pursuits but also for his thoughtful reflections, documented in personal travel diaries that explored themes of friendship, self-discovery, and responsibility toward the environment.

In his honour, Jamie Kenyon and Kristopher Davant continued the expedition, ultimately completing the journey and achieving the world record they had set out to accomplish together, dedicating their success to their late friend.

Following his death, the Valerio Daniel De Simoni Association was established, focusing on environmental awareness, humanitarian work, and support for disadvantaged communities, including refugees, asylum seekers, and Indigenous youth.

More than a decade later, Valerio’s legacy continues through his writings, the causes he championed, and the enduring inspiration of a life defined by adventure, compassion, and purpose.
